Social networks have characterized the last decade, but game streaming platforms are creating new spaces for sociality, visibility for influencers and profit for companies that cannot be underestimated. These are those services that allow users to observe and interact live with video game players. Strange? Not even so much if you consider that this is what we did in the 80s by going to bars to surround the players of the first Arcade games such as Space Invaders and Asteroids. A report by StreamElements and Arsenal.gg calculated that approximately 1.2 billion hours were broadcast live in December, +12% compared to the previous year.
The market leader, considering only game streaming, is India Mobile Number Data Twitch , a spin-off of the glorious Justin.tv and acquired by Amazon in 2014 for 970 million dollars, which accounts for 61% of hours of streaming watched. In 2019 the platform lost ground to its competitors, who became more aggressive. In second place, far behind and slightly decreasing, is YouTube Gaming with 28%. In third place with a share of 8.5% stands Facebook Gaming , which has had considerable growth: over 5.4 share points and +210% in hours of viewing. Therefore, more than the players, the hours of streaming performed and the time spent by spectators increased. Microsoft's Mixer , despite having snatched the star Ninja from Twitch, has to settle for 2.6%.
An interesting phenomenon to keep an eye on is that of live streaming that does not have games as its subject. On Twitch, the "Just Chatting" or "Chat" category in which the creator talks freely or about specific topics interacting with viewers, was the most viewed in December (over 80 million hours viewed). For the first time, it surpassed the views of League of Legends, Fortnite and Counter-Strike games. Another growing non-gaming category is the one dedicated to ASMR , videos of whispers and sounds aimed at relaxing the audience, also very present on YouTube. I am sure that in 2020 the war between the protagonists of game streaming will become more intense: YouTube, Facebook and Microsoft will continue to undermine Amazon both by trying to grab influencers with millionaire contracts and by providing new forms of remuneration.
